Intrapartum (Labour) Care

The majority of births are without risk factors or complications. However, we as caregivers, follow certain protocols at the beginning and throughout labour, to ensure positive outcomes and experiences for the women and their babies.

A positive childbirth experience is one that fulfills or exceeds a woman’s expectations and the delivery of a baby in a safe clinical and psychological environment.

Dr. Portia Mosadi believes in family-centered care. She encourages respectful family participation and shared experience. (eg family members supporting, taking photographs, etc.)

Care throughout labour and birth involves respectful and effective communication, optimal pain control, appropriate medical procedures and companionship.

Antenatal Care (Screening, Sonars, etc.) with comprehensive pregnancy surveillance:

Screening:
This process occurs during the early stages of pregnancy, enabling decisions around the best course of action, should a high-risk pregnancy be identified. Specimens and ultrasound techniques assist the doctor in detecting any abnormalities,

Sonars:
Sonars are done throughout the pregnancy to monitor fetal growth, the placenta and the volume of amniotic fluid.

High-Risk Pregnancy Care:

Complications can occur during any stage of a pregnancy, and a low-risk pregnancy can become high-risk. Risk factors include existing health conditions, being overweight, multiple births and young or old maternal age. Medical conditions can occur during the pregnancy, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Preeclampsia:
A serious, potentially life-threatening, condition that causes high blood pressure, urinary protein and swelling.

Gestational Diabetes:
A form of Diabetes that develops during pregnancy. This may increase the mother’s risk of developing preeclampsia or future diabetes. It can also negatively affect the baby’s weight, or cause preterm birth, respiratory distress syndrome or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

It is absolutely critical and imperative that a woman who has been assessed to have a high-risk pregnancy, be managed by a specialist, to ensure the best outcome for both mother and baby. Dr. Portia Mosadi is highly trained and experienced in this field.

Postpartum Care

Postpartum care encompasses the management of the mother and newborn (and infant) in the days following the birth.

Healthy mothers and newborns stay at their healthcare facility for at least 24 hours. Within this period, they are monitored and examined by medical professionals.

The baby and mother are assessed, key childcare elements, (such as breastfeeding, cord-care, skin-to-skin contact and immunisation) discussed, as well as providing support to the mother and her emotional well-being.
